Cherokee Nation in Northeast Oklahoma: Story, Place, and Continuance
When we speak about the Cherokee Nation in northeast Oklahoma, we must speak in the present tense. Cherokee people are not remnants of a culture that disappeared into history, nor are they figures confined to museum exhibits, historical markers, or stories about the Trail of Tears. The Cherokee Nation is a living sovereign government, a community of more than 470,000 citizens worldwide, and a cultural homeland whose institutions continue to influence northeastern Oklahoma.
